Rabat – The health sector union coalition in Morocco has resumed its protests, criticizing the government for failing to honor its commitments made in the agreement of July 23, 2024. The six unions forming the coalition announced a renewed wave of strikes and protests beginning early next year in response to the government’s inaction.
Government’s Broken Promises
The ongoing governmental delays in implementing the agreed-upon measures have exacerbated frustration among health workers. According to a statement by the union coalition, the government failed to uphold its commitments, even after a meeting with the Minister of Health on November 10, where it was agreed to expedite the process of drafting and implementing new regulatory texts for the healthcare sector.
Instead of advancing these reforms, the Ministry of Health has reportedly closed communication channels and backtracked on previous agreements, prompting the coalition to send urgent requests for meetings. Despite proposing a workshop to finalize the necessary regulatory frameworks, these initiatives have gone unanswered, reinforcing the perception of government neglect.
Mounting Frustration Among Health Workers
The union’s statement highlighted the deteriorating morale of health workers, who form the backbone of Morocco’s healthcare system. The government’s failure to address their demands threatens the stability of the healthcare sector and undermines efforts for meaningful reform. Workers report being unable to continue operating effectively under such strained conditions, as the government’s indifference not only jeopardizes their rights but also compromises the quality of healthcare services provided to citizens.
“This negligence reflects the government’s failure to prioritize the public’s genuine interests,” the coalition asserted. While the government focuses on political agendas, the health sector remains marginalized, leaving workers’ calls for genuine reform unanswered.
Renewed Protests and Strikes
Faced with a lack of dialogue, the union coalition has vowed to escalate its actions. The protest plan includes strikes, local and regional demonstrations, and other unprecedented forms of resistance to emphasize their determination to secure their rights.
“This renewed wave of action reflects the unwavering commitment of health workers to stand up for their legitimate demands,” the coalition declared, adding that workers will not relent until their voices are heard and their issues addressed.
A Warning for the Government
The coalition concluded its statement by warning that the government’s inability to address the crisis shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the sector’s needs. “The current state of affairs is a direct result of poor governance that fails to grasp the depth of the sector’s challenges. Health workers have no choice but to persist in their struggle, hoping that their demands will eventually reach decision-makers capable of enacting meaningful change.”
