Algiers – The year 2024 was a landmark year for Algerian sports, marked by numerous victories and accomplishments in various competitions, including three Olympic medals (two golds and one bronze) at the Paris Olympic Games. These successes have left a promising impression for the future of sports in the country.
A Strong Olympic Presence
A delegation of 46 athletes (27 male and 19 female) showcased Algeria’s strength on the Olympic stage, with standout performances from Kaylia Nimour, Imane Khalif, and Jamal Sgaiti. Their achievements resonated loudly in Paris, playing a significant role in Algeria’s diversified representation across multiple sports at the 2024 Olympics.
From athletics and gymnastics to boxing, judo, and water sports (rowing and canoeing), both individual and collective efforts displayed the remarkable progress Algerian sports have made during the past Olympic cycle (2020-2024).
Kaylia Nimour: A Historic Gymnastics Achievement
One of the greatest discoveries of the 2024 Olympics was 17-year-old gymnast Kaylia Nimour, who clinched Algeria’s first-ever Olympic medal in gymnastics. Her impressive performance on the uneven bars earned her a gold medal, showcasing her elegance, technical skill, and power. This victory not only marked a historic moment for Algerian gymnastics but also placed Nimour among the world’s top gymnasts.
Imane Khalif: A Groundbreaking Victory in Boxing
In boxing, Imane Khalif made history by winning the gold medal in the women’s 66kg category. She became the first Algerian woman to earn an Olympic gold, inspiring a new generation of female boxers. Her victory is a testament to the resilience and strength of Algerian women, who have consistently excelled in various fields, leaving an indelible mark on the international stage.
Jamal Sgaiti: A Bronze Medal in Middle-Distance Running
On the men’s side, middle-distance runner Jamal Sgaiti secured a bronze medal in the 800m event, in a fiercely competitive race that demonstrated his high level of performance and physical ability. His medal confirmed his position as one of the world’s leading middle-distance runners.
Algeria’s Strong Olympic Finish
The three Olympic medals placed Algeria 39th in the overall standings, matching the nation’s record from the 1996 Atlanta Games, where Algeria also won two golds (Noureddine Morcelli in the 1500m and the late Hussein Sultani in boxing) along with one bronze.
These Olympic achievements by Nimour, Khalif, and Sgaiti not only filled the nation with pride but also reinforced the values of sportsmanship, unity, and national pride, inspiring future generations.
African Games: A Strong Showing
In addition to the Olympics, Algerian athletes also shone at the African Games in Accra, Ghana, in March 2024, where they collected 114 medals, including 29 gold, 38 silver, and 47 bronze. Many of these successes were achieved by promising young talents, as Algeria finished the competition in 4th place.
Cycling: A Bright Future
Algerian cyclists also made significant strides in 2024. The “Madar-Pro” team won the African Union Cycling Championship, with excellent performances in global competitions. Riders like Nassim Saidi, who won the 2024 Tour of Algeria, and Hamza Yassine, who excelled in several stages of international events in Europe and Asia, were instrumental in this success.
A Year of Success Across the Board
Algerian athletes also achieved success in other continental and international competitions, with many securing titles that underline the growing prominence of Algerian sports. The results from 2024 reflect the tremendous energy and potential of Algerian athletes.
