New York (United Nations) – Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Benjamaa, emphasized on Thursday that combating terrorism in Africa remains a “top priority” for Algeria. His remarks were made in response to a question from the Algerian Press Service (APS) during a press conference outlining the UN Security Council’s January agenda, chaired by Algeria.
“As an African country, Algeria stands in solidarity with its sister nations on the continent and seeks to share its expertise in combating terrorism,” Benjamaa stated.
He highlighted Algeria’s success in eradicating terrorism domestically, while acknowledging that the threat persists in other parts of the continent. “Algeria is ready to share its experience in counterterrorism with African countries, respecting the specificities of each nation,” he added.
The diplomat also pointed out that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune serves as the African Union’s coordinator for combating terrorism and violent extremism. “With humility and determination, Algeria is committed to offering its expertise to friendly nations, particularly in Africa,” he reiterated.
In addition to counterterrorism, Benjamaa addressed other international issues during the press conference, including:
- The situation in Libya.
- The ongoing crisis in Palestine, particularly the Israeli aggression in Gaza.
- The challenges faced by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
- The Western Sahara conflict, emphasizing that it remains a decolonization issue of high priority for Algeria, Africa, and the United Nations.
