Algeria Welcomes Ceasefire Agreement in Gaza Strip

Algiers, January 16, 2025 – Algeria expressed its satisfaction on Thursday following the announcement of a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. The country emphasized the importance of implementing the agreement in all its aspects and dimensions, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs.

The statement reads: “Algeria welcomes the announcement of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. This long-awaited development aims to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and address the ongoing injustices they endure under the Israeli occupation, which has waged a campaign of extermination for over fifteen months.”

Algeria commended the relentless efforts of the international mediation team that facilitated this agreement. However, it stressed the necessity of fully implementing the ceasefire terms, including ensuring a comprehensive and permanent cessation of hostilities, lifting all restrictions on humanitarian aid directed toward the Palestinian people, and securing the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from Palestinian territories.

The statement further highlighted: “This step, which aligns with Algeria’s continuous efforts and initiatives since joining the United Nations Security Council, represents a partial response to the aspirations of the Palestinian people. However, it must be followed by additional measures, including reconstruction efforts, the reunification of Palestinian territories, and the creation of tangible opportunities for establishing an independent and sovereign Palestinian state. These actions are essential to achieving a just, lasting, and final resolution to the Arab-Israeli conflict, and a prerequisite for restoring peace and stability throughout the Middle East.”

This statement reaffirms Algeria’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause and its active diplomatic role in seeking justice and peace in the region.
