Algeria’s Constitutional Court President to Participate in High-Level Meeting on Constitutional Protections in Cairo

Algiers – The President of Algeria’s Constitutional Court, Mr. Omar Belhaj, will participate in the 8th High-Level Meeting of African Constitutional Courts, Supreme Courts, and Constitutional Councils, which will take place in Cairo on January 27-28, according to a statement released on Thursday by the Constitutional Court.

The statement explained that, at the invitation of the President of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court, Mr. Bolus Eskandar Fahmy, Mr. Belhaj will attend the meeting accompanied by Constitutional Court member Mr. Ammar Boudiaf. The event will focus on the theme: “Constitutional Protection of Rights and Freedoms in Exceptional Circumstances.”

During the meeting, Mr. Belhaj will deliver a keynote speech highlighting Algeria’s advancements in guaranteeing constitutional rights and freedoms during exceptional circumstances. He will emphasize Algeria’s constitutional reforms, particularly those introduced in the November 1, 2020, constitutional amendment, which marked significant progress in this area.

Promoting Judicial Collaboration Across Africa

The event aims to strengthen collaboration and dialogue between Africa’s highest judicial and constitutional authorities. Representatives from 51 African and Arab constitutional courts and councils are expected to attend, addressing issues of mutual interest and sharing expertise in safeguarding rights, freedoms, and the rule of law.

Key topics on the agenda include:

  • The nature of risks faced by African nations in exceptional circumstances.
  • Legislative experiences in managing extraordinary situations.
  • Constitutional oversight of laws and regulations governing exceptional conditions.

This meeting underscores the commitment of African judicial bodies to address shared challenges and enhance constitutional protections across the region.
