New York – Karim Khan, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), has highlighted the worsening humanitarian crisis in Darfur over the past six months, marked by widespread suffering, famine, and violence resulting from the ongoing conflict in Sudan. In his briefing to the United Nations Security Council on Monday, chaired by Algeria, Khan called for decisive action to confront the atrocities in the region.
In his address, Khan described the deteriorating situation in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, emphasizing “serious allegations of targeting innocent civilians and attacks on critical civilian infrastructure, including hospitals.” He stated that “international crimes are undoubtedly being committed in Darfur and are being used daily as a weapon in the conflict,” adding that his conclusions are based on solid evidence and information, not mere analysis.
Concern for Women and Gender-Based Violence
Khan expressed particular concern over reports of women and girls being targeted and allegations of gender-based crimes. He stressed that addressing these violations remains a priority for his office. Over the past six months, the ICC has sought to improve its response to the situation on the ground, enhancing efficiency and engagement with the unfolding crisis.
He also revealed that the ICC is taking steps to file requests for arrest warrants related to crimes allegedly committed in West Darfur. “Such requests will only be made when sufficient evidence ensures a strong likelihood of conviction,” Khan explained.
Call for Action from the UN Security Council
Khan urged the UN Security Council to take decisive measures to address the escalating atrocities in Darfur, emphasizing the urgent need for justice and accountability as violence and human suffering continue to escalate.
He also called on council members to reaffirm their commitment to the principles of UN Security Council Resolution 1593, adopted two decades ago, which referred the situation in Darfur to the ICC.
Ongoing Conflict in Sudan
Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The violence has resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians, widespread destruction of infrastructure, and the displacement of millions, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis.
