Algeria Expresses “Deep Concern” Over Renewed Conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo, Calls for Restraint

Algiers – Algeria has voiced “deep concern” over the resurgence of violence and escalating tensions in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), urging all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize dialogue to restore peace in the region. The statement, issued on Saturday, February 1, 2025, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, underscores Algeria’s commitment to supporting regional stability.
Algeria Urges De-escalation, Backs Regional Mediation Efforts
In its official communiqué, the ministry emphasized Algeria’s call for “calm and de-escalation to create favorable conditions for resuming responsible dialogue and negotiations aimed at achieving lasting peace.” Algeria also reaffirmed its support for the outcomes of recent extraordinary summits held by the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which advocated for “good-faith negotiations” among all parties involved in the conflict.
Support for Angolan and Kenyan Mediation
Despite the complexities of the situation, Algeria praised the mediation efforts of Angolan President João Lourenço and Kenyan President William Ruto, describing their work as “tireless and dedicated.” The statement highlighted Algeria’s endorsement of their roles in bridging divides between conflicting factions.
President Tebboune Directs Diplomatic Outreach
In a proactive diplomatic move, President Abdelmadjid Teboun instructed the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, to engage with foreign ministers of countries directly involved in the conflict, as well as those leading mediation initiatives. This effort aims to “reaffirm Algeria’s readiness to assist ongoing mediation endeavors and contribute to restoring peace and stability in the DRC and the broader Great Lakes region.”
