Algiers – The Cinémathèque of Algiers hosted on Saturday the premiere of the feature film “For You… Hasnaa” by director Khaled Kebiche. The film portrays the suffering of Algerian families under French colonial crimes.

This new cinematic work, presented as part of the special screenings of films produced by the Ministry of Culture and Arts through the Algerian Center of Cinematography, is directed by Khaled Kebiche and written by Shahinaz Massaoudi. Based on a true story that occurred during the Liberation Revolution, the film recreates some of its details in a historical framework. It narrates a aspect of the suffering endured by Algerian families during the French colonial period and how the colonizer sought to dismantle family ties and divide its members through exile and the most heinous forms of physical and psychological torture against women and children.

Over 53 minutes, viewers witness the events of this human saga and what befell “Hasnaa,” the wife of a Mujahid “Abdel Latif.” She was about to give birth in her humble home when soldiers invaded her sanctuary, inflicting various forms of violence upon her and her family. They took her away and isolated her to give birth to her son “Zakaria” in a hospital, forcing her to abandon him in order to reveal her husband’s location and compel him to surrender.

The film explores the themes of sacrifice and solidarity among family members and within the ranks of the Algerian Mujahideen, highlighting their choice to sacrifice for the sake of the nation rather than their personal interests. Conversely, the film denounces the feelings of hatred and resentment shown by the French colonizer towards Algerians. The director applied his creative vision to the cinematic image by blending it with the world of the seventh art.

The director chose filming locations that reflect the harsh environment in which the story unfolded. The exterior scenes depicted the simple life of Algerians, while the interior scenes were filmed amidst simple decor characterized by austerity in the use of furniture and accessories. Instead, the focus was on a visual message through lighting and camera angles that reflect a series of conflicting emotions, such as fear, anxiety, fanaticism, arrogance, and vulnerability.

The film features a cast of young actors, including Narjess Asli, Abdelkader Taher, Djamel Aoun, Houria Bahloul, and Abdelhadi Mohamed Amine. Director Kebiche stated that this work is considered the first part of a trilogy that will narrate more details of this historical story.
