Algeria is taking a decisive step in telecommunications as President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has approved the deployment of 5G technology, ordering in-depth studies to ensure meticulous preparation for this major project.
During a Cabinet meeting on Monday, the President directed further studies on the 5G mobile network, underscoring the authorities’ commitment to a technologically advanced, economically viable, and profitable rollout. The goal, as stated in the Cabinet’s release, is to ensure the process is “comprehensive and efficient by all technological and financial standards.”
This move aims to leverage 5G’s benefits to bolster the national economic system, support its development, and provide citizens with top-quality technological services. The announcement follows a government presentation on March 19, 2025, which outlined preparations for launching 5G networks, highlighting its role as “a key driver of economic and industrial development” and its contribution to improving digital public services and advancing Algeria’s digital transformation.
The upcoming 5G rollout marks a true technological revolution, with its ultra-fast data speeds, low latency, and capacity for mass connectivity promising significant upgrades to digital infrastructure. It is expected to pave the way for innovative strategic applications in critical sectors like agriculture, industry, health, transport, and education, positioning Algeria as a regional hub for information and communication technology.
The technology is anticipated to boost the national economy and innovation, particularly in areas like the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and smart cities, while creating jobs, enhancing digital infrastructure, improving industrial competitiveness, and meeting rising connectivity demands.
To ensure a successful transition, 5G will be deployed “gradually,” guaranteeing “financial sustainability for operators and cost optimization for necessary investments” in this significant technological shift.
