Argentina Reaffirms Solidarity with the Sahrawi People and Their Right to Self-Determination

Buenos Aires – Mercedes Cabeza, the Deputy Secretary-General of Argentina’s Association of State Workers, reaffirmed her union’s unwavering solidarity with the Sahrawi people and their legitimate right to self-determination, emphasizing the depth of Argentina’s longstanding support for the Sahrawi cause.

During her meeting on Thursday with Mohamed Ali Aali Salem, the Polisario Front’s representative in Argentina, at the union’s headquarters in Buenos Aires, both sides discussed key areas of collaboration and coordination between the Polisario Front and the Association of State Workers. The talks focused particularly on the union’s steadfast stance in supporting the Sahrawi people’s struggle for freedom and independence.

In a statement to “Equipe Media,” Cabeza stressed that her organization “will continue its unconditional support for the Sahrawi people’s struggle,” affirming that both the Association of State Workers and the General Confederation of Independent Workers “stand as Sahrawi soil”—a symbolic expression of the Argentinian labor movement’s deep-rooted commitment to the just Sahrawi cause.

For his part, the Polisario Front’s representative presented an overview of the latest developments in Western Sahara, shedding light on the ongoing challenges faced by the Sahrawi people under Moroccan occupation and the continuous human rights violations committed by the occupying forces. He underlined the vital role of international labor and trade union movements in maintaining their support until the Sahrawi people achieve full freedom and independence.

This meeting comes as part of the historical solidarity that unites Latin American labor movements with the Sahrawi struggle—a relationship that has grown stronger in recent years, marked by increasingly firm positions supporting the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and the end of colonialism in Africa’s last remaining colony.
