Diphtheria Outbreak in Skikda: Health Ministry Launches Vaccination Campaign

The Ministry of Health has confirmed five cases of diphtheria in Skikda province, including two fatalities. Among the deceased are a 25-year-old foreign national and a 12-year-old girl who had not been vaccinated against the disease.

In response to the outbreak, a crisis cell has been established within the provincial health and population directorate to closely monitor the epidemiological situation. This cell is coordinating preventive and treatment measures in collaboration with local authorities.

Health officials have initiated thorough epidemiological investigations, focusing on individuals who had contact with the confirmed cases. These individuals are undergoing preventative treatment (chemoprophylaxis) and receiving diphtheria vaccinations to curb the spread of infection and prevent further cases. Over the past 48 hours, local health teams have vaccinated 514 people as part of a proactive vaccination campaign overseen by the provincial crisis cell.

The Ministry of Health maintains that the situation is currently stable, with continuous on-the-ground monitoring and enhanced epidemiological surveillance activities across all health facilities in Skikda. Confirmed cases are being managed according to established treatment protocols. The ministry urges all citizens to adhere to the national vaccination schedule, emphasizing that vaccines are the most effective means of preventing diphtheria and other infectious diseases, and assuring the public that vaccines are readily available at healthcare institutions.

The Ministry of Health has affirmed its commitment to monitoring the health situation in Skikda, dedicating ongoing efforts to ensure public safety and protect public health. Public awareness campaigns are also underway to educate the community about the importance of vaccination and disease prevention.
