Three unidentified drones were observed flying over the Doel nuclear power plant near Antwerp, Belgium, on Sunday. This incident marks another instance of drones being detected near critical infrastructure in the country.
The plant’s operator, Engie, stated that the drone activity had no impact on the operation of the Doel nuclear power plant, which is a major electricity source for Belgium. The incident is currently under investigation by Belgian authorities.
This follows previous drone sightings at Liege Airport, which temporarily halted air traffic for approximately one hour. Similar incidents have also been reported near the Kleine Brogel military base in Flanders, a site reportedly used by NATO and speculated to house U.S. nuclear weapons.
Belgian police have launched investigations into these prior incidents, but the operators of the drones remain unidentified, and no charges have been filed. The increase in drone activity has raised concerns about security vulnerabilities at sensitive locations.
Last week, the German Defense Ministry announced that the German armed forces would provide support to Belgium in defending against drone incursions, following a request from the Belgian government. This collaborative effort underscores the growing concern over drone-related incidents across Europe.
Belgium and other European nations have experienced a rise in drone-related incidents, with some attributing the activity to Russian involvement, allegations that Moscow has denied.
DZWatch will continue to monitor this developing situation and provide updates as they become available.
