France has recorded a new record number of prisoners, surpassing the 74,000 mark, according to official figures released by the French Ministry of Justice on Monday.

The total number of inmates in French prisons on July 1 was 74,513, up from 73,699 the previous month, according to data released by the Ministry of Justice.

This is the sixth time in a few months that France has broken its record for the number of prisoners, and the first time it has exceeded the 74,000 mark. This represents a significant overcrowding in French prisons, which was condemned by the European Court of Human Rights on July 6.

There are 16,643 inmates who exceed the number of available places in French prisons. Due to this overcrowding, 2,478 detainees were forced to sleep on mattresses on the floor, compared to 1,872 on July 1, 2022.

It is worth noting that French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced on July 19 that the French police had arrested 3,800 people during the recent wave of violence that the country has witnessed.

The overcrowding of French prisons is a serious problem that has been getting worse in recent years. There are a number of factors that have contributed to this problem, including:

  • The rise in crime rates in France
  • The length of sentences handed down by French courts
  • The lack of rehabilitation programs in French prisons

The overcrowding of French prisons has a number of negative consequences, including:

  • Increased violence and tension in prisons
  • A decrease in the quality of life for prisoners
  • An increased risk of recidivism

The French government has taken some steps to address the problem of overcrowding in prisons, such as building new prisons and increasing the number of rehabilitation programs. However, more needs to be done to address this problem.thumb_upthumb_downsharemore_vert
