Algiers – The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has released the official university holiday calendar for the 2025-2026 academic year. The announcement, formalized under Ministerial Decree No. 1558 dated November 19, 2005, outlines the specific dates for academic breaks across all higher education institutions.
The decree, rooted in established legal and regulatory frameworks, aims to provide clarity and structure to the academic year. It references Presidential Decree No. 25-241 (September 14, 2025) concerning the appointment of government members, as well as Executive Decrees No. 08-129 and No. 08-130 (May 3, 2008), which detail the statutes for university hospital professors and research professors, respectively. Further legal basis is drawn from Executive Decree No. 13-77 (January 30, 2013), defining the responsibilities of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, alongside regulations governing higher education degree programs.
The calendar details the following holiday periods:
- Winter Break: Begins Thursday, December 18, 2025 (evening) and ends Saturday, January 3, 2026 (morning).
- Spring Break: Begins Thursday, March 19, 2026 (evening) and ends Saturday, April 4, 2026 (morning).
- Summer Break: Begins Thursday, July 9, 2026 (evening) and ends Saturday, September 5, 2026 (morning).
The decree also addresses potential extensions to the academic year. Article Four stipulates that higher education institutions facing delays in completing pedagogical or scientific obligations may extend the 2025-2026 academic year until Thursday, July 23, 2026 (evening) at the latest. Exceptions to the decree’s application are outlined in Article Five.
This announcement allows students and faculty to plan accordingly for the upcoming academic year.
