President Tebboune Grants Clemency to Boualem Sansal

DZWatch Exclusive: President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has granted clemency to Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, following a formal request from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The Presidency announced on November 12, 2025, that President Tebboune received the request from his German counterpart on November 10th. The request specifically sought a pardon for Sansal.

According to a statement released by the President’s office, President Tebboune gave considerable attention to the request, recognizing its humanitarian basis. He subsequently invoked Article 91, paragraph 8, of the Algerian Constitution, and after due legal consultation, decided to respond positively to the appeal from the Federal Republic of Germany.

“The President, recognizing the unique circumstances and humanitarian considerations presented by President Steinmeier, has chosen to exercise his constitutional prerogative to grant clemency,” the statement read.

The statement further indicated that the German government would be responsible for the transfer and medical care of Mr. Sansal.

This decision marks a significant development in the case of Boualem Sansal, a prominent Algerian intellectual. The move underscores the strong relationship between Algeria and Germany and highlights the importance of humanitarian considerations in international relations.
