Ilizi, Algeria – Customs officials in Bordj El Haouas, Ilizi province, have intercepted a significant quantity of smuggled goods, according to a statement released today. The operation resulted in the seizure of 13,000 packs of foreign-made cigarettes and 1,200 boxes of flavored tobacco.
The multi-task customs unit conducted the operation following heightened surveillance along known smuggling routes in the region. The seized goods are believed to have been destined for sale on the black market, depriving the Algerian treasury of significant revenue.
In addition to the contraband, authorities also impounded the vehicle used in the smuggling operation. Two individuals suspected of involvement in the illicit activity were apprehended and are currently in custody. They have been handed over to the relevant judicial authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
DZWatch has learned that the suspects face charges related to smuggling, tax evasion, and potentially other offenses depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation. The customs administration has reiterated its commitment to combating smuggling and protecting the national economy. This seizure is part of a broader effort to clamp down on illegal trade activities that undermine legitimate businesses and threaten public health.
This operation highlights the continued efforts of Algerian customs to combat cross-border crime and enforce trade regulations. Authorities are urging citizens to report any suspicious activity that may be related to smuggling or other illegal activities. The fight against smuggling remains a top priority for the Algerian government.
