The Turkish Red Crescent has delivered vital food assistance to those displaced from Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur State in Sudan. This follows a recent influx of tens of thousands of people seeking refuge in the city of Al-Dabbah, located in the Northern State, after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) gained control of Al-Fashir.
Faruk Aksoy, head of the Turkish Red Crescent team in Sudan, stated that the organization distributed 500 food packages and 655 infant formula packages at the Al-Afad refugee camp in Al-Dabbah. He emphasized that these relief efforts are being carried out in collaboration with the Sudanese Red Crescent. It is estimated that tens of thousands of people displaced from Al-Fashir are currently residing in 185 camps throughout Al-Dabbah in the Northern State.
Aksoy further noted that the Turkish Red Crescent will continue its activities through an ongoing donation campaign specifically aimed at providing support to those in need throughout Sudan. The organization is committed to reaching vulnerable families affected by the ongoing conflict.
The humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate due to the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023. This conflict has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of approximately 13 million people.
The RSF seized control of Al-Fashir in late October, leading to reports of atrocities against civilians. The ongoing violence has raised concerns about the potential for further geographical division within the country. While RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti) has acknowledged that “excesses” were committed by his forces in Al-Fashir and claims to have formed investigation committees, the humanitarian crisis continues to escalate.
In addition to the Darfur region, the three states of the Kordofan region (North, West, and South) have also witnessed intense clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF in recent days, leading to further displacement. Currently, the RSF controls all five states of the Darfur region in western Sudan, with the exception of some northern parts of North Darfur State.
