ALGIERS – Algeria has emerged as a leading barley producer in the Arab world and Africa, securing the second position in both regions, according to recent data. The nation’s barley output reached approximately 1.2 million tons during the 2024/2025 season.
The data positions Algeria just behind Iraq in the Arab region, where production totaled 1.4 million tons for the same period. Across Africa, Ethiopia leads with a substantial 2.48 million tons of barley produced during the season.
Algeria’s barley production witnessed a notable increase of 17% compared to the previous 2023/2024 season. Production rose from 1.03 million tons to 1.23 million tons, demonstrating significant growth in the agricultural sector.
Globally, barley production reached approximately 143.33 million tons. This represents a slight decrease of 0.13% compared to the 2023/2024 season, which saw a total output of 143.51 million tons.
This strong performance underscores Algeria’s growing importance in regional and global agricultural markets. The increase in production highlights the country’s efforts to enhance its agricultural capabilities and contribute to food security.
