New Retirement Law for Teachers Approved in Algeria

Algiers – The Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security has released clarifications regarding new amendments concerning retirement for the education sector. The changes aim to acknowledge and appreciate the vital contributions of teachers across the nation.

Responding to a written inquiry in the People’s National Assembly, the Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security explained that the amendment to Article 2 of Law No. 83-12 reflects the President’s commitment to educators. This adjustment reduces the retirement age for teachers by three years, recognizing the unique demands and challenges inherent in the teaching profession.

The initiative seeks to honor educators for their significant role in shaping future generations, aligning with a fair and sustainable approach to improve their social standing.

The Minister emphasized that this amendment is part of a comprehensive strategy to meet the evolving needs of social protection systems. He also addressed the legal procedures for implementing these changes, noting that a draft regulatory text outlining the conditions and procedures for early retirement has been prepared.

The draft has undergone extensive review, with input from relevant sectors, to finalize its provisions. The project has been submitted to the General Secretariat of the Government for necessary coordination and finalization of the regulatory text.

The Minister concluded by stating that the regulatory text for implementing this amendment is currently in the final stages of issuance. All necessary procedures are being completed for its imminent release. These measures underscore the government’s commitment to supporting the education sector and providing effective solutions to improve the working and retirement conditions of teachers, reflecting a broader dedication to enhancing social protection systems in Algeria.
