National Statistics Office Placed Under Prime Minister’s Authority

Algiers, Algeria – The National Statistics Office (ONS) has been placed under the authority of the Prime Minister, according to a recent presidential decree.

Presidential Decree No. 25-293, published in Official Gazette No. 75, formalizes the change. The decree, signed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on November 10th, assigns oversight of the ONS to the Prime Minister’s office.

This new directive effectively repeals Presidential Decree No. 25-129, dated April 22nd of this year. That previous decree had placed the ONS under the supervision of the High Commissioner for Digitalization.

The shift signifies a change in the administrative structure governing the national statistics agency. The implications of this change in oversight are still being assessed, but it is expected to streamline the reporting and strategic alignment of national statistics with broader governmental priorities.

The National Statistics Office is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating statistical data on various aspects of the Algerian economy and society. This data is crucial for informed decision-making by policymakers, researchers, and the public.

Further details regarding the specific responsibilities and operational changes resulting from this decree are expected to be released in the coming days.
