President Donald Trump has reportedly approved a new peace plan aimed at resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. According to an administration official, the plan was developed over several weeks by senior officials, with consultations involving Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev and Ukrainian representatives.
The initiative reportedly involves key figures such as Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. The core focus is said to be providing both sides with security guarantees to ensure a lasting peace.
Politico reports that aspects of the peace plan are still in flux. The unveiling of the plan has reportedly surprised some Ukrainian and European officials.
A senior Ukrainian official revealed that new American proposals to end the war in Ukraine have surfaced, coinciding with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and a planned meeting with U.S. military officials in Kyiv. Direct talks between Kyiv and Moscow have been stalled since a meeting in Istanbul last July.
Turkey, a NATO member maintaining ties with both sides, hosted an initial round of peace talks in 2022. These talks remained unique until President Trump initiated a new effort earlier this year.
Details remain scarce regarding how the American plan addresses contentious issues such as territorial control in eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces have been making gradual advances but still control less territory than Moscow initially demanded. The conflict in eastern Ukraine has been ongoing for approximately four years.
Since February 24, 2022, Russia has been engaged in a military offensive against Ukraine.
