Spanish People’s Party Reaffirms Support for Sahrawi Self-Determination

Gran Canaria, Spain – Deputies from the Spanish People’s Party (PP) have reiterated their unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, emphasizing that international law and United Nations resolutions are the true foundation of the Sahrawi cause.

This declaration was made during a comprehensive meeting held at the Gran Canaria Island Council headquarters with representatives of the Polisario Front in the archipelago. The meeting was attended by local political figures who are prominent historical supporters of the Sahrawi cause, as well as presidents of Canarian associations for friendship with the Sahrawi people.

Carmelo Barrio, speaking on behalf of the PP parliamentary delegation, stated that international legitimacy and UN resolutions are the real basis for resolving the conflict. He affirmed that the party’s position on the dispute is clear and based on defending the right of the Sahrawi people to choose their future democratically through a free and fair referendum.

The meeting, which was also attended by Carmelo Ramírez, Advisor for International Solidarity to the Island Council and a prominent friend of the Sahrawi people in the Canary Islands, addressed the latest developments in the issue. These included recent initiatives supported by the PP within the Spanish Parliament, primarily proposals calling for adherence to a referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people.

Ramírez emphasized in his remarks that “the recent Security Council resolution does not grant Morocco any sovereignty over the territory,” describing Moroccan claims in this regard as a “blatant fallacy.”

For his part, the Polisario Front representative in the Canary Islands, Ali Salem Sidi Zein, expressed his appreciation for the PP’s initiative. He noted that the Sahrawi people have held clear legal and international recognition of their right to freedom and independence for five decades. He also mentioned that the Sahrawi issue remains on the Fourth Committee on Decolonization’s agenda since 1963.

He affirmed that the Sahrawi people will continue their struggle until they achieve full independence, adding that the meeting with PP deputies is an important step towards strengthening international political solidarity with the cause. The Sahrawi people continue to fight for self-determination.
