Algeria Launches New Phase to Boost Clean Hydrogen Economy

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Algeria is embarking on a new phase to bolster its clean hydrogen economy, according to Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab. The announcement was made during a high-level session titled “Unlocking the Potential of Clean Hydrogen through Investment and Innovation” held in Riyadh on Monday, November 24, 2025.

The session took place within the framework of the 21st General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The event was attended by prominent officials and diplomats, including the Algerian Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to UNIDO, Larbi Latroche, the Algerian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Cherif Oualid, and the Head of the National Agency for Mining Activities, Mourad Hanifi.

In his address, Minister Arkab emphasized Algeria’s commitment to the initiative, highlighting the rapid transformations occurring in the global energy sector. He commended UNIDO and the Global Environment Facility for their support in the transition towards clean energy and for recognizing Algeria as a key partner in developing clean hydrogen as a strategic solution for the future of energy.

Arkab stated that Algeria adopted a national clean hydrogen strategy in 2023, which includes gradual steps to build an integrated industry. This includes establishing a legislative framework, implementing pilot projects, and developing national export capabilities. He further noted that Algeria possesses exceptional natural advantages due to its vast solar resources, positioning it as a leading country capable of producing renewable hydrogen at a competitive cost.

The Minister also pointed out that the 2026 Finance Law includes significant tax and customs incentives, such as exemptions on equipment related to hydrogen production, including electrolyzers and solar panels, thereby enhancing the attractiveness of the national market for investors.

Regarding international cooperation, Arkab announced tangible progress in the South H2 Corridor project for transporting green hydrogen from Algeria to Europe. This project receives direct support from the European Union and technical assistance from UNIDO.The project is expected to significantly contribute to Algeria’s economic diversification and sustainable development goals.
