Cholera Outbreak Claims Thousands of Lives Across Africa

Africa is grappling with a severe cholera outbreak, resulting in nearly 7,000 deaths since the beginning of 2025. According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the continent has recorded a staggering 6,795 fatalities attributed to the waterborne disease.

As of Saturday, reports indicate that 23 African nations have collectively documented 294,244 cholera infections. This translates to a concerning fatality rate of 2.3 percent, significantly exceeding the average observed in previous years. The surge in cholera cases throughout the current year, which is still ongoing, represents a dramatic escalation compared to 2022.

Health officials highlight that both infection and mortality rates have nearly tripled, underscoring the alarming trajectory of the disease’s spread in recent years. Factors contributing to the outbreak’s severity include inadequate sanitation, limited access to clean water, and strained healthcare systems in affected regions. The Africa CDC is working with member states to implement enhanced surveillance, improve access to treatment, and promote preventative measures such as hygiene education and water purification.

The ongoing cholera crisis poses a significant public health challenge for the continent, demanding urgent and coordinated efforts to mitigate its impact and prevent further loss of life. International organizations and local authorities are collaborating to deploy resources and expertise to combat the outbreak and strengthen long-term resilience against waterborne diseases.
