IAEA Seeks to Resume Full Cooperation with Iran

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is actively pursuing the resumption of full cooperation with Iran, according to recent statements from Director General Rafael Grossi.

Grossi reiterated the IAEA’s commitment to re-engaging with Tehran, emphasizing the importance of reinstating comprehensive inspection activities. “We want to be able to resume dealing with Tehran fully to restore inspection activities,” he stated, highlighting the agency’s desire to resume inspections within Iranian territory.

These statements follow a resolution passed last week by the IAEA’s 35-nation Board of Governors. The resolution called for Iran to promptly disclose the size of its enriched uranium stockpile and provide information regarding nuclear sites that have been subject to attacks. Iranian authorities have voiced strong criticism of this resolution in recent days.

Relations between Iran and the IAEA were strained following the conflict in June, with Iran initially suspending cooperation and accusing the agency of contributing to the escalation after a resolution criticizing its nuclear program. However, a subsequent agreement was reached in September, outlining a framework for renewed collaboration and the resumption of inspections. This agreement, however, excluded nuclear sites affected by the June attacks.

IAEA estimates indicate that Iran possesses approximately 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity. This level is close to the 90% threshold required for the production of nuclear weapons. This assessment follows the Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities on June 13th. The IAEA continues to monitor the situation closely.
