Ausserd Refugee Camps, Algeria – International delegations attending the 11th Congress of the Sahrawi Youth Union (UJSARIO) have called on the international community to ensure the Sahrawi people are granted their right to self-determination and independence. The congress, held in Ausserd, is focusing on mobilizing youth to confront current challenges.
Speaking on the sidelines of the three-day conference, Monica, a representative of the Brazilian Association for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, emphasized the urgent need for international action. She stated that the international community must protect the Sahrawi people in the occupied territories and pressure Morocco to guarantee their right to freedom and independence.
Monica further urged the international community to intervene immediately to end the colonization of Western Sahara and halt the abuses perpetrated against the Sahrawi people. She added that the Brazilian delegation would work tirelessly to pressure its government to ensure the Sahrawi people’s rights, which have been denied for five decades, and to raise awareness of their plight in international youth forums.
Gustavo Carneiro, a member of the Portuguese Solidarity Movement with the Sahrawi People, reaffirmed his movement’s support for the Sahrawi cause. He praised the Sahrawi youth movement’s active role in the struggle for freedom and emancipation.
Carneiro also called for an end to the aggression against the Sahrawi people in the occupied territories and the blatant violations committed against unarmed Sahrawi citizens.
Similarly, Hani Andrea, representing the Spanish Youth Union, expressed her full and unconditional solidarity with the Sahrawi people in their fight for their legitimate rights to self-determination and independence. Andrea stated, “As an organization representing over 7 million young people in Spain, we believe we have a responsibility in the current conflict, and therefore we are very keen to stand with the Sahrawi youth.” She also argued that Spanish and international organizations are not doing enough to resolve the conflict.
