Moscow and Kyiv have both indicated a significant acceleration in diplomatic efforts surrounding a US-led peace plan aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict. The renewed push for negotiations suggests a potential breakthrough in efforts to find a resolution to the crisis.
According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, Ukrainian and American negotiating teams are expected to meet soon. Sybiha emphasized Kyiv’s focus on concrete steps within the proposed peace framework, stating during a press conference that achieving a ceasefire is of paramount importance to Ukraine. “Reaching a truce is very important for Ukraine,” he stated.
On the Russian side, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov confirmed the planned visit of US Presidential Envoy Steve Witkow. Ryabkov asserted that “there is no reason to doubt this” and that Russia is prepared to engage with any proposals presented by the American envoy. He further added that details regarding the US plan’s version of a settlement would become clearer after Witkow’s arrival, signaling Russia’s willingness to cooperate with proposals made during the visit.
Ryabkov also acknowledged the lingering uncertainty surrounding the outcomes of discussions in Geneva and the role of certain European powers allegedly attempting to obstruct progress. “We will see what Witkow presents, and then we will work on it,” Ryabkov stated, highlighting Russia’s cautious yet open approach.
Earlier in the week, Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov announced that several US administration officials specializing in Ukrainian affairs would accompany Envoy Witkow during his visit to Moscow next week. Ushakov explained that the visit aims to advance discussions on Ukrainian issues and enhance coordination between the two sides.
