Neighborhood Gang Crime Rates Decline in Algeria

Algiers, November 27, 2025 – Recent data indicates a significant decrease in crime rates associated with neighborhood gangs across Algeria. This positive trend is attributed to effective legal measures and increased citizen participation through reporting, according to Justice Minister Lotfi Boujemaa.

Minister Boujemaa addressed the National Assembly during a question-and-answer session led by Speaker Azzouz Nasseri, highlighting the impact of preventative legal action and the combined efforts of various security agencies. He emphasized that the involvement of citizens in reporting suspicious activity has played a crucial role in curbing gang-related crimes.

The Minister presented statistical data illustrating the decline. The number of individuals convicted of gang-related crimes has fallen steadily, from 1,628 in 2022 to 1,500 in 2023, and further to 1,100 in 2024. He also noted that the proportion of individuals incarcerated for gang-related offenses remains relatively small compared to those imprisoned for drug-related crimes.

Furthermore, Minister Boujemaa underscored the government’s commitment to combating these gangs through the development of a national strategy aimed at preserving public order, protecting individuals, and safeguarding property. This strategy includes provisions for victim support, offering psychological, social, and medical assistance, as well as facilitating access to justice. The legal framework also includes deterrent measures, with potential penalties for gang-related activities extending to life imprisonment. The government remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of all Algerian citizens.
