Algiers, November 27, 2025 – Algeria is on the verge of becoming a leading force in the African pharmaceutical industry, driven by significant growth in domestic drug production. According to Dr. Jamal Fourar, Director-General of Prevention and Health Promotion at the Ministry of Health, Algeria now covers approximately 82% of its drug needs through local manufacturing, demonstrating a robust capacity to meet national demand.
Speaking on the sidelines of the African Ministerial Conference on Local Pharmaceutical Production, Dr. Fourar highlighted the presence of 233 pharmaceutical and medical supply manufacturing units in Algeria. He emphasized that these facilities play a crucial role in responding to emergency health situations.
“Despite the challenges the world faced at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the emergence of national industrial capabilities in the field of pharmaceuticals enabled the health system to confront the pandemic more efficiently,” Dr. Fourar stated.
Dr. Fourar expressed optimism that Algeria is positioned to become a leader in pharmaceutical manufacturing across the African continent. He outlined ambitions to boost investment and expand the distribution of medicines to other African countries, contributing to a more independent continent reliant on African-made pharmaceuticals.
During the opening of the African Ministerial Conference on Local Pharmaceutical Production, President Tebboune, in a speech delivered by the Prime Minister, noted that Algeria possesses approximately one-third of the pharmaceutical establishments on the African continent. Out of 649 factories across Africa, around 230 are located in Algeria, with over 100 new projects currently underway.
The President added, “We have production that covers our needs, and we can export the surplus. Algeria is ready to assist its African brothers and provide them with the necessary expertise.” He also noted that the World Health Organization chose Algeria to host this first-of-its-kind continental event, “due to the steps it has taken in the field of health security since 2020 and the reforms that have been achieved in the pharmaceutical industry sector.”
