Algeria Elected to Lead African Child Rights Committee

In a significant victory for Algerian diplomacy, Algeria has been elected to preside over the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC). Sabrina Kherchi will represent Algeria in this role, succeeding Wilson Almeida Adao, for the term spanning 2025-2027.

The election took place during the 46th Ordinary Session of the Committee, held in Maseru, Lesotho. This prestigious appointment underscores Algeria’s pivotal role within the African continent and stands as a testament to its unwavering commitment to safeguarding and promoting the rights and well-being of children, both domestically and continent-wide.

Algeria’s dedication to fulfilling its obligations under the African Union’s charter and its tireless efforts to uphold the values enshrined within it have been duly recognized. The election of Ms. Kherchi reflects the confidence placed in her competence and the constructive work she has undertaken since becoming a member of the Committee.

Her efforts have consistently prioritized the best interests of African children, working to ensure the protection and promotion of their fundamental rights, in accordance with the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

Ms. Kherchi’s journey with the ACERWC began in 2023 when she was elected as a member for a five-year term during the 43rd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council in Nairobi, Kenya. This latest achievement, following Algeria’s recent assumption of the position of Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission in February, further solidifies the nation’s continental standing and its strategic role in advocating for the interests of the African continent and its people.

This election marks a significant step forward for Algeria in its ongoing commitment to advancing children’s rights across Africa. DZWatch will continue to monitor developments and provide in-depth coverage of Algeria’s contributions to the ACERWC. Stay tuned for further updates.
