Algeria Elected to Lead African Child Rights Committee

Algiers, November 27, 2025 – Algeria has been elected to preside over the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC). Sabrina KAHAR will lead the committee for the 2025-2027 term.

The election took place during the 46th Ordinary Session of the ACERWC in Maseru, Lesotho. KAHAR succeeds Welson Almeida Adao in this role.

This election recognizes Algeria’s significant role within Africa and acknowledges its ongoing efforts to promote and protect child rights and welfare nationally. It further highlights Algeria’s commitment to fulfilling its continental obligations and upholding the values enshrined in the African Union’s Constitutive Act, all in service of the continent’s people.

The election also reflects Sabrina KAHAR’s competence and constructive work as a member of the committee. Her dedication to prioritizing the best interests of African children and ensuring the protection and promotion of their fundamental rights, as outlined in the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, has been recognized.

KAHAR was first elected as a member of the ACERWC for a five-year term in 2023 during the 43rd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council in Nairobi, Kenya.

This latest achievement follows Algeria’s success in securing the position of Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission this past February, further solidifying its continental standing and strategic role in advocating for the interests of the continent and its people. This leadership position underscores Algeria’s commitment to advancing child welfare across the African continent.
