Algerian Cup Revamp: Key Changes Announced for 2026 Edition

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has unveiled significant changes to the Algerian Cup competition, set to take effect in the 2026 edition. These reforms aim to modernize the tournament’s regulations, improve match conditions, and ensure fair play for all participating clubs, regardless of their league.

Home Advantage Rules Modified: In the Round of 32 and Round of 16, the home team – whether from a higher division or drawn first – will host the match, provided their stadium meets specific criteria. These include a minimum seating capacity of 4,000, adequate lighting for evening games, and a pitch conforming to the Algerian Cup Committee’s standards. Exceptions will be made for stadiums undergoing renovations or deemed unsuitable for the 2025-2026 season, prioritizing player safety and match quality.

Clubs may also request to host matches at alternative venues if necessary. To preserve the cup’s traditions and reduce organizational costs, the number of traveling players has been limited to 20.

No Postponements Except in Extreme Circumstances: The FAF has emphasized that match postponements will be strictly prohibited, except in cases of force majeure. All eligible players must participate. Failure to appear for a match will result in penalties according to established regulations.

Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals: The team drawn first will host the quarter-final and semi-final matches at their home stadium or a venue of their choice, provided it has a minimum capacity of 15,000. If a suitable stadium is unavailable, a neutral venue selected by the Cup Organizing Committee will be used.

VAR Implementation: The use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the quarter-finals and semi-finals is contingent on its official adoption during the 2025 season.

The FAF reiterated its commitment to preventing match postponements except in the most exceptional circumstances and ensuring that all teams fulfill their obligations to guarantee the smooth progression of the tournament according to schedule.
