Sudan: Al-Burhan Discusses Peace Prospects with Norwegian Envoy

Khartoum – General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, met today with Andreas Kravik, Norwegian State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy to Sudan, to discuss avenues for achieving lasting peace in the country.

During the meeting, General al-Burhan acknowledged Norway’s long-standing role as a key partner in the Sudanese peace process, spanning several decades. He emphasized the Sudanese government’s commitment to achieving a fair and sustainable peace that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people and safeguards their rights.

“We value Norway’s continuous support and dedication to Sudan’s stability,” stated General al-Burhan.

Envoy Kravik reiterated Norway’s commitment to working with partners to foster a unified Sudan. He stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive political process and the implementation of a humanitarian truce to ensure the unimpeded delivery of aid to those in need.

Kravik clarified that the proposed humanitarian truce, presented weeks ago, is intended to pave the way for an inclusive political dialogue. “A ceasefire is crucial to allow humanitarian access and build trust for further negotiations,” he stated.

The discussions highlighted the complex challenges facing Sudan and the importance of continued international engagement in facilitating a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. The meeting underscores the commitment of both Sudan and Norway to pursuing a path towards stability and prosperity for the Sudanese people.

The situation in Sudan remains a critical focus for regional and international actors, with many emphasizing the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to a civilian-led transition.
