France Urged to Reconsider Western Sahara Stance

Paris, France – France is facing renewed calls to revise its position on the Western Sahara issue and align itself with international law. The appeal was made on Friday during the 49th EUCOCO conference held in Paris.

Pierre Galand, President of the European Coordination of Support for the Sahrawi People (EUCOCO), stated that France’s current stance is inconsistent with international legal norms and hinders the resolution of the long-standing conflict. He emphasized the importance of adhering to international resolutions and principles regarding self-determination.

“France has a crucial role to play in fostering a just and lasting solution in Western Sahara,” Galand said. “By aligning its policies with international law, France can contribute to a peaceful resolution that respects the rights of the Sahrawi people.”

The EUCOCO conference serves as a platform for solidarity and advocacy for the Sahrawi cause. Participants from various European countries gathered to discuss strategies for promoting self-determination and human rights in the region.

The Western Sahara has been a disputed territory for decades, with the Sahrawi people seeking independence from Morocco. The United Nations considers Western Sahara a non-self-governing territory and has repeatedly called for a referendum on self-determination.

The call for France to reconsider its position reflects a growing international concern over the ongoing situation in Western Sahara and the need for a resolution that upholds international law and respects the rights of the Sahrawi people. It remains to be seen whether the French government will respond to these appeals and adjust its policy accordingly.
