Algiers – Algeria is intensifying its efforts to prevent floods as part of a broader strategy to adapt to climate change, according to the Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kawthar Krikou. Speaking in Algiers on Thursday, the Minister emphasized that the nation is adopting a pragmatic and scientific approach, prioritizing meticulous planning and robust institutional integration.
This initiative, Minister Krikou stated, directly aligns with the directives of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The President has repeatedly underscored the need for proactive measures to mitigate the risks associated with increasingly erratic weather patterns and rising sea levels.
“Our approach is rooted in science and evidence-based decision-making,” Minister Krikou explained. “We are moving beyond reactive measures and embracing a proactive strategy that anticipates potential flood events and implements preventative solutions.”
The core of this strategy involves enhanced data collection and analysis, utilizing advanced modeling techniques to identify vulnerable areas and predict the likelihood and severity of potential floods. This information will then be used to inform infrastructure development, land-use planning, and emergency preparedness efforts.
Furthermore, the Minister highlighted the crucial role of institutional collaboration. Effective flood prevention requires seamless coordination between various government agencies, including those responsible for water management, urban planning, civil protection, and environmental monitoring. The government is working to streamline communication channels and establish clear lines of responsibility to ensure a unified and efficient response to flood threats.
The Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life is actively engaged in promoting public awareness and community engagement. Public education campaigns are being launched to inform citizens about flood risks, preventative measures, and emergency procedures. The government recognizes that community involvement is essential for the success of its flood prevention efforts.
The intensified focus on flood prevention reflects Algeria’s commitment to building a more resilient and sustainable future in the face of climate change. By embracing a scientific approach and fostering institutional integration, the nation aims to protect its citizens, infrastructure, and natural resources from the devastating impacts of floods.
