International Campaign Calls for Release of Marwan Barghouti

DZWatch Exclusive: An international campaign has been launched advocating for the release of imprisoned Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti. Considered by many as a symbol of hope for a future Palestinian state, the renewed push for his freedom comes amidst ongoing negotiations related to the current ceasefire.

The international arena is witnessing increased activity in support of Barghouti, a prominent and popular Palestinian figure. For many Palestinians, he represents the hope for renewed political legitimacy in the occupied territories. His family, with the support of civil society organizations, is spearheading a campaign to place his case at the forefront of political and diplomatic discussions.

The campaign is gaining visibility through murals bearing the slogan “Free Marwan” appearing in cities, and a large art installation in his hometown. Several political and cultural figures are reportedly preparing to issue a public letter demanding his release.

Opinion polls consistently show Barghouti as one of the most popular politicians in the West Bank and Gaza, fueling the belief that he is the most likely candidate to lead a new political era should he be released. However, some parties fear his ability to unite Palestinians and restore faith in political institutions.

Barghouti has been imprisoned for over 20 years. The Inter-Parliamentary Union has described his trial as flawed. Despite calls for his inclusion in prisoner exchange deals, he remains incarcerated, reportedly subjected to solitary confinement, denied family visits, and restricted access to the International Committee of the Red Cross. There have also been reports of physical assaults.

Barghouti is viewed by many as a leading advocate for a two-state solution within the Fatah movement.
