Algeria Boosts Minimum Wage, Unemployment Benefits

Algiers – In a move aimed at improving the social welfare of Algerian citizens, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune presided over a Council of Ministers meeting that resulted in significant decisions regarding the national minimum wage and unemployment benefits.

The Council approved an increase to the national minimum wage, raising it from 20,000 Algerian dinars to 24,000 dinars. This increase is scheduled to take effect in January 2026 and represents a substantial adjustment after decades.

Furthermore, unemployment benefits will also see an increase, rising from 15,000 Algerian dinars to 18,000 dinars. In a further adjustment, the requirement to renew unemployment benefit applications has been modified. Claimants will now be eligible for benefits for a minimum period of one year, with the possibility of renewal.

President Tebboune instructed the Minister of Labor to enhance the role of the National Employment Agency. This is to ensure transparency in the employment process and to effectively guide job seekers. The Minister of Labor was also tasked with presenting proposals for increasing pensions and retirement benefits. These proposals will be reviewed by the Ministry of Finance and subsequently presented to the next Council of Ministers meeting.

These measures underscore the government’s commitment to improving the living standards of Algerian citizens and addressing socio-economic concerns. DZWatch will continue to monitor these developments and provide further updates.
