Khartoum, Sudan – The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a stark warning regarding the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan, stating that the nation is grappling with one of the world’s most severe hunger emergencies.
In a statement released today, the WFP highlighted the dire situation, noting that “millions of Sudanese people are on the brink of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.” The warning underscores the rapidly deteriorating conditions across the country, exacerbated by ongoing conflict and displacement.
The ongoing clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces have triggered a massive displacement crisis, with the United Nations and other international organizations estimating that over fourteen million people have been forced from their homes, becoming either internally displaced persons or refugees in neighboring countries. This makes it one of the largest displacement crises globally.
The conflict has severely disrupted agricultural production, trade, and access to essential services, further compounding the food security situation. Prior to the recent escalation of violence, the United Nations had already warned that over 21.2 million people across Sudan were facing acute hunger.
The WFP’s urgent appeal emphasizes the need for immediate and sustained humanitarian assistance to prevent widespread famine and further loss of life. The organization is calling on the international community to step up its support to Sudan and provide the necessary resources to address the country’s urgent food security needs. The situation demands immediate attention and a coordinated response to avert a humanitarian disaster of immense proportions.
