Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Ataf conveyed the greetings of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during the opening of the twelfth session of the “Oran Process” conference on peace and security in Africa. He emphasized the President’s strong support for the process and his commitment to ensuring its continuity and strengthening.
The Minister affirmed that Algeria is hosting this conference, building upon the initial edition that established a strategic vision for unifying the African voice and enhancing its influence in the United Nations Security Council, a key forum for multilateral action in international peace and security.
Ataf stated that the twelve years since the process’s inception provide an opportunity to assess the progress made in realizing this strategic vision on the ground and within the framework of the United Nations and Security Council resolutions. He noted that the Oran Process has become a regular continental event on the agenda of the African Union and its Peace and Security Council.
The Minister highlighted that the three African countries in the Security Council have formed a unified, strong, and respected bloc with significant international weight. He emphasized that Africa has reached a level unmatched by any other continent, enabling its representatives to advocate for the continent’s priorities with a unified voice, moving beyond individual national positions.
Ataf mentioned that African delegations in the Security Council, in collaboration with Somalia and Sierra Leone, have strived to form a cohesive bloc reflecting genuine African positions on peace and security issues. This collaboration adheres strictly to the decisions of the African Union and the directives of its Peace and Security Council, in accordance with the African doctrine aimed at drying up the sources of tension and conflict.
The Minister concluded his address by emphasizing Africa’s urgent need to strengthen its diplomatic role, develop and implement African solutions to its problems, and revive a diplomatic approach that has proven effective throughout the continent’s history.
