Algerian international Issa Mandi was substituted early in Lille’s match against Toulouse on Sunday, raising concerns about his fitness. The defender left the field after approximately 30 minutes, visibly frustrated, during the Ligue 1 encounter which Lille ultimately won 1-0.
Lille coach Bruno Genesio has addressed the situation, explaining that Mandi has been struggling with a persistent thigh issue for several weeks. Genesio revealed that the player has been managing the pain, but the demanding schedule has taken its toll.
“Given the number of matches he’s played as a starter, both for Lille and the Algerian national team, he has reached his maximum capacity for endurance. This explains his immediate withdrawal from the game,” Genesio told L’Equipe.
Genesio expressed optimism about Mandi’s recovery, highlighting the player’s importance to the team. “He’s been performing at a high level this season, despite his age, making him an indispensable element in Lille’s lineup.”
The coach’s comments will be a relief to Lille fans, who are keen to see the experienced defender back on the pitch as soon as possible. Mandi’s contribution has been crucial to Lille’s performance this season. Further updates on Mandi’s condition will be provided as they become available.
