Former U.S. President Donald Trump has accused Honduran election officials of attempting to manipulate the outcome of the presidential election. Trump voiced his concerns amidst a tight race where he has openly supported the right-wing candidate, Nasry Asfura.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “It looks like Honduras is trying to change the results of their Presidential election. If they do that, there will be a heavy price to pay.”
The Honduran presidential candidates, Nasry Asfura and Salvador Nasralla, are neck and neck, with the latest vote counts showing each candidate receiving just under 40% of the vote. Trump has publicly endorsed Asfura, the candidate representing the conservative National Party, over Nasralla, the Liberal Party’s nominee.
The latest vote count updates from the Honduran presidential election revealed a near tie between Asfura and Nasralla. The close contest has been marred by technical issues with the election results website.
The President of the National Electoral Council, Ana Paola Hall, appealed for calm and patience, acknowledging the extremely close vote count displayed on the website as the counting process continues. She made the appeal in a post on X.
The candidate who ultimately secures a simple majority will govern Honduras from 2026 to 2030.
Frustration surrounding the election has grown due to persistent issues with the online results portal, which is intended to provide real-time updates. The website has experienced prolonged outages, drawing criticism from local media outlets.
DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation in Honduras and provide updates as they become available.
