Algiers Conference Proposes Truth Commission on Colonial Crimes

Algiers – Participants at the International Conference on Colonial Crimes in Africa, held in Algiers, have proposed the establishment of a commission dedicated to uncovering the “historical truth” surrounding colonial-era atrocities. The proposal is a key element of the “Algiers Declaration,” issued at the conclusion of the continental gathering.

The declaration emphasizes the “importance of conducting a continental audit of the economic consequences of colonialism in order to develop a just compensation strategy.” This strategy would encompass, among other measures, restitution for plundered wealth, debt cancellation, and equitable financing for development initiatives across the continent.

“We support the creation of an African Commission for Memory and Historical Truth,” the declaration states. This commission would be tasked with harmonizing historical curricula, overseeing the collection of archival materials, coordinating African research centers, and preparing analyses and recommendations for the continent.

Furthermore, the Algiers Declaration underscores the “urgent need to reform African education systems to fully integrate pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial history, and to support younger generations in developing an informed historical awareness.”

Participants also recommended the creation of digital African archives, the redefinition of educational curricula, and the establishment of memorials, museums, and commemorative days to remember the victims and legacies of colonialism.

The conference marks a significant step towards addressing the long-lasting impact of colonial rule on the African continent. The proposed commission represents a commitment to confronting the past and seeking justice for historical wrongs. The initiative aims to foster a deeper understanding of colonialism’s legacy and promote a more equitable future for Africa.
