Leading Brazilian multinational WEG has expressed strong interest in bolstering its collaboration with Algeria, with a focus on long-term investments and establishing the nation as a regional platform for its industrial and technological activities.
During a meeting held Tuesday between the Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and WEG’s CEO, Francisco Martinez, the Brazilian executive reaffirmed the company’s commitment to strengthening ties with Algeria. Martinez emphasized WEG’s ambition to transform Algeria into a regional hub through technology transfer, knowledge sharing, and the development of maintenance and training capabilities.
The meeting, also attended by the CEOs of Sonatrach, Nordine Daoudi, and Sonarem, Reda Belhadj, focused on evaluating the existing cooperation and partnership between WEG and the Algerian state-owned companies. Discussions centered on expanding collaboration within the oil, gas, and mining sectors, with a particular emphasis on enhancing technical and technological cooperation. Key areas of interest include the manufacturing of equipment, mineral processing, seawater desalination and related equipment, and the development of advanced digital solutions for equipment management and operation.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines, the discussions also covered potential business and investment opportunities in Algeria. Both parties underscored the importance of expanding WEG’s presence through projects aimed at localizing equipment manufacturing and maintenance, aligning with the memorandum of understanding signed between Sonatrach and WEG in May 2023.
Special attention was given to Sonarem’s mining projects, particularly those involving the integration of modern technologies for resource exploitation and processing. The use of renewable energy sources, such as solar power, and energy storage solutions in oil, gas, and mining projects were also discussed.
Furthermore, the potential establishment of a specialized maintenance center for electrical equipment in Algeria was explored, aiming to enhance national capabilities in advanced technical maintenance. Minister Arkab affirmed that Algeria offers significant partnership and investment opportunities in both the hydrocarbon and mining sectors.
WEG is a global leader in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment and technology. This potential expansion signifies a major step towards strengthening Algeria’s industrial capabilities and regional influence.
