Minister Attaf Calls for Unified African Voice at Oran Process

ORAN – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, has urged for a unified African voice to confront the significant challenges facing the continent. Speaking at the conclusion of the 12th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, the “Oran Process,” Minister Attaf emphasized the critical need to strengthen African unity and intensify joint efforts to address the rapidly evolving security and political landscape.

Minister Attaf, addressing ministers, ambassadors, and high-ranking officials from the African Union and the United Nations, conveyed Algeria’s appreciation for the participation of member states and partners. He noted the growing international momentum behind the Oran Process, underscoring its importance as a central platform for formulating a collective vision on security in Africa.

The Minister highlighted what he termed a “troubling trifecta” exacerbating the continent’s fragile security situation. This includes unconstitutional changes of government, which he described as an increasingly frequent occurrence, leading the African Union to suspend two countries in just 42 days. The second issue is the escalating terrorism in the Sahel region, where terrorist organizations have established themselves as de facto authorities over vast areas. Finally, he mentioned external interference that has seized control of conflict resolution, marginalizing the role of local, sovereign actors.

Attaf asserted that the current situation demands a repositioning of the African Union as a central player in preventing crises and resolving conflicts. He stated that “African solutions to African problems are no longer just a slogan, but a strategic choice to protect the continent from international polarization that reproduces crises.”

Furthermore, the Minister emphasized the importance of strengthening the integration between the African Union’s Peace and Security Council and the group of African members in the UN Security Council, recognizing them as key partners in amplifying Africa’s voice within international forums.

Minister Attaf reiterated that Algeria prioritizes preserving African unity and a unified voice. He reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to supporting African-led solutions and fostering greater collaboration to address the continent’s pressing security challenges.
