Sudan Army Gains Ground in South Kordofan After Clashes

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have reportedly regained control of the town of Mabsoot in South Kordofan state following clashes with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu. The SPLM-N is allied with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

According to eyewitness accounts, SAF troops secured Mabsoot, located west of Al-Abbasiya Tagali, after engaging SPLM-N forces. Sources indicate that with the capture of Mabsoot, all areas west of Al-Abbasiya Tagali are now under the control of the Sudanese military.

Videos circulating on social media purportedly show SAF soldiers announcing their control over Mabsoot. The strategic importance of Al-Abbasiya Tagali and its surrounding areas lies in its role as a vital link between North and South Kordofan. Furthermore, it allows the army to control key routes that impact troop movements and the humanitarian situation for civilians in neighboring regions.

On Sunday, the Sudanese army asserted control over several areas west of Al-Abbasiya Tagali, including Tabisa, Al-Damra, Qardud Jama, and Al-Murib, following battles with the RSF and the SPLM-N.

The three states of the Kordofan region (North, West, and South) have witnessed intense clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces for weeks, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands of people.

Out of the country’s 18 states, the RSF controls all five states of the Darfur region in the west, except for some northern parts of North Darfur state, which remain under the army’s control. The army controls most of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum.

The humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues to worsen due to the ongoing conflict between the army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023 over disagreements regarding the integration of the military. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people and the displacement of approximately 13 million.

The situation remains fluid, and DZWatch will continue to provide updates as they become available.
