Kremlin Official Details Putin-Whitkov Meeting on Ukraine

Moscow – A high-ranking Kremlin official has revealed details regarding a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Envoy Steve Whitkov held in Moscow on Tuesday. The official described the discussions as “fruitful and constructive,” focusing on potential pathways toward resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

According to the Kremlin’s diplomatic advisor, Yuri Ushakov, the meeting, which lasted approximately five hours, saw President Putin task Whitkov with conveying several significant political messages to US President Donald Trump. While the specifics of these messages remain undisclosed, Ushakov emphasized that both sides agreed to maintain confidentiality regarding the core substance of the negotiations.

“We agreed with the Americans not to disclose the content of the negotiations that took place, but the meeting discussed the issue of territories and prospects for a long-term peaceful settlement for Ukraine,” the official stated. He further indicated that Moscow might be amenable to certain aspects of the US proposal for ending the war in Ukraine.

The Kremlin has reportedly received four additional documents alongside the primary US plan. The possibility of a future meeting between Presidents Putin and Trump will hinge on the progress achieved in these ongoing settlement efforts.

Earlier in the month, President Putin expressed the view that the American plan “could form the basis for a final peaceful settlement,” although the Kremlin maintains that the proposal has not been discussed in detail with Washington. The US plan reportedly involves Ukraine ceding the entirety of the Donetsk region to Russia, including areas currently under Ukrainian control. These territories would then become a demilitarized buffer zone, internationally recognized as Russian territory. The plan also grants Russia control over the Luhansk and Crimea regions, while freezing the front lines in Kherson and Zaporizhia.

Whitkov has visited Moscow five times this year, most recently on August 6th, where discussions centered on the Ukrainian crisis and prospects for cooperation between the United States and Russia. DZWatch will continue to follow this developing story.
