Algiers, Algeria – Bankole Adeoye, the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, has praised the significant success of the 12th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, dubbed the “Oran Process.” Speaking in Algiers on Tuesday, Adeoye emphasized that the forum has established itself as a crucial platform for joint African action within international bodies.
During the closing session, Commissioner Adeoye stated that the 12th edition facilitated the exploration of current dynamics, the assessment of progress, the extraction of necessary lessons, and the promotion of the AU agenda, particularly concerning the reform of the United Nations Security Council. He highlighted that this platform is firmly rooted in Agenda 2063, aimed at achieving a strong, united, and influential Africa on the global stage.
Adeoye underscored the importance of the A3+ group within the UN Security Council, asserting that effective progress hinges on collective African action and the maintenance of peace and security. He affirmed that the strategic outcomes resulting from the two-day discussions represent a decisive step toward the future.
The AU Commissioner also expressed the African Union Commission’s gratitude for the seminar’s contribution to strengthening Africa’s voice within the UN Security Council. He acknowledged that this achievement would not have been possible without Algeria’s facilitation, organization, and hospitality.
Addressing the depth of analysis and conviction expressed during the discussions, Adeoye emphasized that Africa must confront contemporary challenges, defend its sovereignty, protect its territorial integrity, and promote the interests of its youth, especially African women. He reiterated that African governance, the peace and security architecture, and continental institutional tools remain essential for working towards global governance reform.
Adeoye expressed his hope to reconvene next year in Algeria or Oran to continue the discussion, with the ultimate goal of achieving genuine reform of the UN Security Council, silencing the guns permanently, and achieving sustainable development across the continent. He also conveyed his appreciation to the President of the Peace and Security Council for December, Ivorian Minister Leon Adom, for his leadership and timely administration.
