Brahimi Warns of Israeli Infiltration in Morocco

Algiers – Veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi has issued a stark warning regarding what he describes as the growing Israeli influence within Morocco, raising concerns about the potential destabilizing effects on the entire Maghreb region.

The former Algerian Foreign Minister and UN Special Envoy asserted that Israel has successfully established a significant foothold in Morocco, a development he believes complicates the already fragile geopolitical landscape of North Africa.

In an interview, Brahimi challenged the notion that Algeria is an obstacle to Maghreb unity, arguing instead that Morocco’s normalization of relations with Israel, amid ongoing Israeli-Palestinian tensions, serves to further complicate regional dynamics.

“Yes, it is a governmental choice, but does it serve the interests of the Maghreb? Does it facilitate the Maghreb situation or complicate it further?” Brahimi questioned, highlighting the stark contrast between the Moroccan government’s policy and public sentiment. He pointed to ongoing protests in Morocco against Israel, indicating a disconnect between the ruling elite and the population.

Brahimi also criticized the initial framework of the Arab Maghreb Union, suggesting it was flawed from the outset. He argued that the three key nations – Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco – failed to establish effective cooperation and a solid foundation for regional integration.

Addressing the global order, Brahimi expressed a slightly more optimistic outlook than in previous years regarding the possibility of a third world war. He noted that major powers like the United States, China, and Russia appear to be avoiding direct confrontation. However, he cautioned that this doesn’t necessarily signify a move towards cooperation, emphasizing the emergence of a multipolar world order still in its formative stages.

The comments come at a sensitive time for regional relations, with the Brahimi’s assessment likely to fuel further debate about the future of the Maghreb and the role of external actors in the region.
