China Eyes Deeper Algeria Ties as New Five-Year Plan Looms

Algiers – 2026 is set to be a pivotal year for Algerian-Chinese cooperation, according to remarks made by the Chinese Ambassador to Algeria, Dong Guangli, during a press conference held in Algiers on Wednesday. The year marks the commencement of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, coinciding with Algeria’s ongoing efforts to build a ‘New Algeria’.

Ambassador Guangli emphasized that both nations stand at the threshold of a historic moment, unlocking broader horizons for shared development. He described Algeria and China as ‘sincere friends and natural partners’ united by a common vision for progress.

The Ambassador affirmed China’s readiness to collaborate closely with Algeria to ensure the effective implementation of key agreements reached by the leaders of both countries. This includes strengthening people-to-people exchanges, deepening cooperation across all sectors, and elevating the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Algeria to new heights.

Guangli highlighted the dynamic nature of bilateral relations throughout the year, citing enhanced political ties through regular high-level communication, exchanges of expertise in governance, and close coordination on regional and international issues.

On the economic front, the Ambassador noted the deepening of practical partnerships, with trade volumes remaining high and showing positive signs of exceeding last year’s levels. The Algerian-Chinese Investment Forum was hailed as a significant success, resulting in the signing of agreements for projects valued at over $2 billion. Existing Chinese investments in Algeria are nearing $7 billion, with progress reported in mining, renewable energy, and digitalization projects.

Cultural exchanges have also received a significant boost this year, with the opening of the first Confucius Institute at the University of Algiers 2 and the organization of various cultural events and language competitions, further strengthening the historical bonds of friendship between the two peoples.

Ismail Debche, President of the Algerian-Chinese Friendship Association, also spoke, highlighting the humanitarian dimension of the Algerian-Chinese relationship, dating back to China’s support for the Algerian Revolution.
