Algiers, November 5, 2025 – The province of Algiers has been awarded the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Cities Award, also known as the Shanghai Award. The prestigious recognition, placing Algiers among the top five cities globally, was presented during a ceremony held in Bogota, Colombia.
According to a statement released by the Wilaya of Algiers, the award coincides with the global celebration of World Cities Day. It acknowledges the significant strides Algiers has made in the realm of sustainable urban development. The United Nations has recognized Algiers as a city progressing steadily towards becoming a modern, inclusive, and sustainable capital by the year 2030.
The statement further emphasizes that the award is a testament to Algiers’ strategic vision in modernization and development projects. It also recognizes the tangible achievements in various critical areas, including environmental infrastructure, ecological transition, natural disaster and risk management, preservation of cultural heritage, enhanced tourism appeal, support for innovation and digital transformation, and the provision of decent housing.
Algiers was selected from a pool of 85 cities representing 33 countries. Alongside Algiers, four other winning cities were recognized: Medina in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Bogota in Colombia, Espoo in Finland, and Incheon in South Korea.
This award underscores Algiers’ commitment to building a future that is both prosperous and environmentally responsible. The province hopes to continue to serve as a model for sustainable urban development in the region.
